What you have to measure
- CH₄ concentration at components (ppm) against the 500 / 1 000 / 7 000 ppmv thresholds — handheld or continuous
- CH₄ mass rate (g/h) for quantification and the repair decision
- Continuous CH₄ at compressor and metering stations (fixed NDIR/open-path) for site-level reconciliation
- CH₄ + CO₂ of biomethane at the grid injection point (composition, not just leaks)

Questions engineers ask
Does the Regulation prescribe the detection technology?
No. It sets thresholds in ppmv or g/h and refers to standards to be established under Art. 32; until then 'state-of-the-art industry practices and the best technologies that are commercially available' apply (Art. 14(1)).
Why NDIR for methane?
NDIR reads CH₄ from ppm to 100 vol% with no oxygen dependence and no catalyst poisoning by sulphur compounds — the failure mode of pellistors in sour gas.
Is this only for big operators?
It applies to all operators of assets in scope (production, gathering, processing, transmission, distribution, storage, LNG) regardless of size; only frequencies differ by component and material.
