Indoor air quality monitoring in non-residential buildings

The recast EPBD makes indoor air quality a building requirement: zero-emission non-residential buildings must have measuring and control devices for IAQ, and major renovations must add them where feasible. CO₂ is the reference parameter.

IAQ measuring and control devices — Art. 13(5)Member States shall require non-residential zero-emission buildings to be equipped with measuring and control devices for the monitoring and regulation of indoor air quality; in existing non-residential buildings, when a major renovation occurs, where technically and economically feasible.

National transpositionThe exact parameters (CO₂ set-points, ventilation classes) come from national building codes and EN 16798-1 — the Directive fixes the obligation, not the number.
What you have to measure
  • CO₂ concentration per zone (ppm) as the occupancy/ventilation indicator
  • Demand-controlled ventilation set-points (typ. 800–1 000 ppm, national rules)
  • Optional: humidity, temperature, VOC (non-NDIR)
