Biomethane: REPowerEU target & EN 16723 gas quality
Digester control and grid-injection quality

REPowerEU set a 35 bcm/year biomethane ambition for 2030. Every injected cubic metre is measured twice: for the digester and for the grid contract — CH₄ and CO₂ by NDIR, O₂, H₂S and water by other channels.

Gas quality at injection — EN 16723-1Specifications for biomethane for injection in natural-gas networks; the network operator's grid code sets the numeric limits (Wobbe index, CH₄, O₂, H₂S, water dew point, siloxanes).
Renewable gas certificationGuarantees of origin / RED sustainability certification require metered quantities and quality records.
Methane Regulation linkBiomethane plants connected to the grid fall under methane-emission reporting for the connected network operator; upgrading vent streams count.
What you have to measure
  • Raw biogas: CH₄ 50–70 vol%, CO₂ 30–50 vol%, O₂, H₂S — digester control
  • Upgraded biomethane: CH₄ > 96 vol%, CO₂ < 2–3 vol% (grid code), O₂ < 0,5–1 vol%
  • Off-gas / vent CH₄ slip from the upgrading unit (methane emissions)
  • Non-NDIR: O₂ (electrochemical/paramagnetic), H₂S (electrochemical), water dew point
// Off-spec injection is refused by the DSO (lost revenue, flaring); missing quality records break the certification chain for guarantees of origin.

Questions engineers ask
Does one analyzer cover the whole biomethane spec?
No. NDIR covers CH₄ and CO₂ (and trace hydrocarbons); O₂, H₂S and water dew point need other sensing principles — the TRM-PGA combines channels, the missing ones are specified per project.
