Behaviour with temperature and pressure

Boiling point -191.5 °C at 1 atm: a gas at all normal conditions. Critical point -140.2 °C / 34.99 bar: above this temperature it cannot be liquefied by pressure alone — cylinders hold a compressed gas. Relative density 0.97 (air = 1): about as dense as air — mixes readily; sensor height follows the source. Conversion at 20 °C, 1013 mbar: 1 ppm = 1.16 mg/m³; NDIR reads partial pressure, so readings scale with absolute pressure (value = reading × P/1013) and must be pressure-compensated.

Effect on people

Binds haemoglobin ~200× stronger than O₂ (COHb), starving tissues of oxygen. Odourless and colourless: headache and nausea at 100–200 ppm over hours, confusion and collapse above ~1000 ppm, death from ~1 % (10 000 ppm) within minutes. Flammable 11–75 vol%.

GESTIS main toxic effects: Acute: Deficiency of oxygen in the body tissues as a consequence of partial inhibition of the transport of oxygen in the blood; in particular disturbance of the heart/circulatory system and neurological effects; metabolic disturbances Chronic: ditto at relatively high concentrations of long duration, performance deficits (psychosensorial, motor and mental) following repeated low exposure
